Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it's still more likely that a Wordle doesn't have one.

Today's Wordle answer (game #771)
Today's Wordle answer (game #771) is… BATHE.
It's a funny thing, luck. If you don't get enough of it in Wordle, you can quite easily do everything right but still end up with a below-par score. But get too much of it and it just looks like you're cheating.
Today I scored a 2/6 - my third in the past five games. Yes, we're in the midst of a particularly easy run right now, but even so, three 2s (and two 3s) looks suspicious. I didn't cheat, of course - because there would really be no point in me writing this column each day if I didn't test myself fully. It's honestly just a case of luck being with me over the past few games. But there's really no reason for you to believe me about that!
Assuming you do believe me, we can discuss why my good score today is not only a case of good luck. For starters, it is another easy one. WordleBot says people are solving it in an average of just 3.6, to go with 3.9, 3.7, 3.9, 3.2 and 3.9 in the previous five days. And letter-wise, that makes some sense: B is the third most common starting letter in the game (after S and C), A is the most likely to occur in position #2 and E is the most common ending. T and H are less common in their respective positions, but the T is very common overall, and the H often crops up when the T does. There are no repeated letters, either, so no complications to it at all.
Plus, some of the best Wordle starting words were tremendously helpful today. I'm not going to say they were lucky, because luck is less of a factor with your first guess than probability. Is that a type of luck? Well, maybe. But there's mathematical reasoning behind it. If you played SLATE, for instance, you had just three words to choose from; CARTE was at five, CRATE at six and TRACE at 12.
My personal favorite, STARE, left nine possible answers, so I got off to a very good start through a combination of good sense and, yes, a little luck. But my second guess was mainly about the latter of those two.
I couldn't find nine possibles myself; my list had five on it, LATHE, BATHE, MATTE, ACUTE and HAUTE. I dismissed LATTE, because I remembered that being a past Wordle answer (game #696 in May this year). I didn't find LATKE or TAUPE, which is probably fair enough. And somehow I missed TABLE, probably the most obvious word in that list.
As it happens, I think I would have played BATHE anyway, purely because it would also have pointed the way to LATHE if it was wrong. In fact, it would have guaranteed a 3/6 unless the answer was either MATTE or LATKE (and I'm really not sure the latter is likely to ever be a Wordle answer anyway).
Anyway, I went with BATHE expecting to score a 3/6 and ended up with another 2/6. That's luck for you. I fully expect to come crashing back down to earth tomorrow, though.

Yesterday's Wordle answer (game #770)
Yesterday's Wordle answer (game #770) was… CURLY.
There's no pleasing some people. Or rather, there's no pleasing me. When Wordle periodically throws up one of its horrendously difficult answers - usually something ending in an ER, sometimes a word that just shouldn't be in the game, such as BORAX - I complain loudly about it. But I also get quite bored when we have a run like the one we're currently in the midst of.
Today's answer, CURLY, has an average score of 3.9, according to WordleBot. That's the fifth puzzle in a row (and the sixth in the past week) with an average below 4.0. Come on, NYT - make it harder! Not too hard. But just the right kind of hard. We're after the Goldilocks Wordle here.
I'm being unfair; there's nothing wrong with CURLY as a Wordle word. But if the NYT is now curating answers (and we know that it is) then is it wrong to ask for a bit more variety? Maybe. I'm probably just in a bad mood.
Anyway! CURLY is a perfectly fine Wordle answer. It starts with the second most common starting letter in the game, ends in the second most common ending letter in the game, and contains two others among the top 10 most common letters. U, which sits at no.11, is only just outside that list. With no repeated letters either, there's really nothing to complicate matters here, if you played it sensibly.
By that, I mean that you started with one of the best Wordle starting words (CARTE, which left eight possible solutions, was the top pick today) then followed up with another word designed to narrow things down, rather than necessarily one that might have been the answer. Stop chasing the 2/6s, they only happen when you already have a mere handful of words to choose from.
In my case, STARE had given me a single yellow R and left me with 123 options. I always play CRONY in this scenario, and it usually works well. CRONY might have been the answer, but more importantly it established that a) the R went in the second position, b) it ended in a Y and c) it didn't contain an O.
The fact that the C turned green at the start was a bonus, and contributed greatly to my now having only two words to choose from. They were CURLY and CURVY, and with no particular reason to pick one over the other, I went with the option that contained the more common letters (so L, not V). That proved to be a lucky guess and gave me a 3/6. Plus, I beat WordleBot (4/6), which is always nice.

What is Wordle?
If you're on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you've not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it's the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We've got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it's in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it's not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It's played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times' Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you're competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle's dictionary. You can't guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle's list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won't be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
